Overview

This pairing will be sure to please all wine and cheese lovers for a perfect evening combining heritage wine with artisanal cheese. It will be led by Mark Beringer, the winemaker at Beringer Bros. and Master Sommelier Gillian Ballance. Winemaker Mark Beringer

Mark was immersed in wine from the moment he was born in the heart of the Napa Valley. He knew from a young age that he would follow in the footsteps of pioneering winemakers before him. As a young man, he spent many hours working in his family’s wine store in St. Helena, expanding his knowledge of wine and gaining an appreciation for wines outside of the famous region he has always called home. In 2015, Mark Beringer came ‘home’ to Beringer, joining as Chief Winemaker. “I’m absolutely thrilled to be making wines for the winery, and be part of the next chapter for us in Napa.”

Gillian Ballance, Master Sommelier

Gillian Ballance MS, DWS has spent the last 20 years working in the best fine dining restaurants, hotels and resorts in the United States. Currently Ballance is the National Education Manager at Treasury Wine Estates. In 2012 Ballance passed the esteemed Master Sommelier Diploma Exam through the Court of Master Sommeliers, representing one of 30 women in the world. She received her Higher Certificate of Distinction as well as her Diploma in Wines & Spirits from the British Wine and Spirits Education Trust. In 2016, Ballance became an Approved Education Provider for the WSET Wine and Spirit courses. This year, Ballance was appointed to sit on the James Beard Foundation Beverage Advisory Board.

Ilana Fischer, CEO at Whisps

Ilana Fischer is the CEO of Whisps Snacks, the cheese crisps snack company that’s on a mission to bring premium, quality cheese to people nationwide. With a deep love of cheese, Fischer oversees the entire direction of the company leading a team of 30, headquartered in New York City. Fischer has both an M.A. and MBA from New York University – where she was a Dean’s Scholar and MacCracken Fellow. Fischer pursued her personal passion for cheese by serving as a store lead for a local Whole Foods cheese counter and even interned at the famed Murray’s Cheese in New York City. She also received a B.A magna cum laude in from Barnard College at Columbia University.
