Watching The Olympics On NYC’s First & Only Floating Viewing Experience

Written by: Taryn Lachter

Every four years the Olympic Games come around, and the world gets to revel in the magnificent performance of competitive sports. Personally, my favorite part is always the opening ceremonies, and I was quite excited for this year’s, as Brazil is known to be a colorful, festive place. However, I wasn’t sure how I was going to watch them because I don’t have cable.

Then I heard about the party North River Fish Bar was throwing, and knew it was the best place to watch. Fish Bar is a new 3-story seafood lounge and rooftop joining North River Lobster Company at North River Landing. Featuring a 3,000 sq. ft. outdoor top deck and an additional 6,000 sq. ft. of bi-level interior dining space and lounge. Until the Closing Ceremony, the Fish Bar will be broadcasting the games on their nightly cruises down the Hudson, on a massive 14 by 9 foot flat screen television, one that has better resolution than the Times Square TVs. Yeah, try to beat that. Even all the way down by the Statue of Liberty, the picture was perfect, the sound was clear, and the colors were bright. Plus, it’s pretty cool to brag to your friends that you watched the Olympics on a massive boat.

The staff aboard the boat is excellent, with a full bar and delicious menu. The bottom two levels of the boat have a gorgeous restaurant and bar, but the TV is up on the top deck, so I recommend going early to snag a seat. Trust me, there isn’t much that’s better than sipping a glass of something tasty, while watching the Olympics with the New York City skyline in the background.

If you’re not in the mood to drink, I suggest the Elderflower Lemonade, which is non-alcoholic and tastes fantastic. It’s slightly sweet with a little bit of tang to make for a delicious beverage. Their cocktail list is great, with all kinds of tasty concoctions, as well as a full selection of beers, wines, and top shelf liquors. You can even purchase a wristband for an unlimited food and drink package.

Now let’s talk about the food. The top deck has an extensive appetizers menu, but I’d hardly call them appetizers as the portions were fairly large. My friends and I split a meat and cheese plate, a bowl of the Mediterranean risotto, and the burrata. The meat and cheese platter was enormous, with three kinds of meats and two kinds of cheeses with a delicious, crunchy bread. The risotto didn’t last long on our table as we dug into that pretty quickly. Just try to find me something better than a salty, spicy risotto tossed with baby shrimp and chorizo. Okay, so maybe the only thing better was the Black Truffle Burrata, but that’s because I’m a huge sucker for cheese, and truffles. Creamy, peppery and just a hint of smoke from the truffle, this cheese was absolutely delicious.

The point here is if you want somewhere to enjoy the Olympic Games, without having to be stuck on your own couch, go check out the North River Fish Bar. It sails nightly at 6:30 and 9:15pm, and it’s free to get on the boat. Go check it out now!
