Every now and then a study comes out and tells us that what we love isn’t good for us anymore. There was the one about cheese being like crack, and then when someone told us french fries could kill us, both of which were terrifying. Let’s be honest though- did either of those things keep us from enjoying our favorite foods? Nope.
The same thing happens with wine. We hear it’s healthy to have a glass of red wine, then it’s not, then it is. So we’re here to break it down for you.
First, let’s just get this out there- the key is moderation. Nothing is good for you if you consume it in excessive quantities. Okay good, a disclaimer has been disclaimed. Moving on.
In 2017, CNN reported that a glass of red wine can help lower the risk of a heart attack by 30%, in comparison to non-drinkers. We LOVE that statistic! However, there should be some clarity shined on that statement. It’s not the alcohol in the wine, or really the wine itself- it’s the antioxidants that are in the grapes that make the wine that makes it beneficial.
Studies have been done for many years on the effects of antioxidant intake on the human body and time after time they show that antioxidants help protect and prevent against things like cardiovascular disease and cancer, especially when found in their natural plant-based forms.
In reference to wine specifically, the nature-made chemical that acts as an antioxidant is called resveratrol, and it is most commonly found in red wine, grapes, and berries. This lovely little compound has had proven effects on lowering blood pressure, slowing down age-related cognitive decline, and even easing joint pain.
So, to be clear, we are not promoting alcoholism in the name of heart health, but we are definitely supporting your delicious glass of vino at the end of the day. However, if you’re going to claim medical benefits, make sure you’re drinking red wine not white, as red has more of the happy, helpful plant chemicals we were referring to.
