New York is one of the oldest – but also one of the newest – wine regions in the United States. The first vineyards were planted in the 19th century, but it wasn’t until the 1950s that the first vitis vinifera vines were successfully harvested. Since the 1976 passing of the New York Farm Winery Act and the creation of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation in 1985, our state’s wine industry has grown year after year. With a healthy dose of ingenuity and a collaborative winemaking culture, the number of wineries in New York has grown exponentially over the last ten years – as has the quality of the wines they produce. New York wines continue gaining champions at home and abroad: at wine competitions, in consumer magazines, on retail shelves, and on restaurant lists.
