Below are five places in New York City to spend your afternoon, delicately (or not) sipping delicious wines, and getting educated so you know what you’re doing the next time someone asks you to bring a bottle of wine to dinner.

Corkbuzz

With two locations at Chelsea Market and in Union Square, Corkbuzz is a full restaurant and wine bar, that also offers wine tasting classes. They have multiple classes to choose from, depending on your interests, from Wine 101 and wine and cheese pairings, to a tour of South America, all taught by Master Sommelier Laura Maniec. Each class is chock full of tasty sips and more information than you knew was possible about wine. Feel free to grab a bite after, to soak up all of that yummy wine. Prices vary per class but start around $65. Check here for all of the classes offered at the Union Square location, and here for Chelsea Market.

Chelsea Wine Vault

One word: FREE! Chelsea Wine Vault does free tastings multiple days a week, right inside their store at Chelsea Market. They don’t require an appointment, so you can just walk in, and you’ll get to taste four to five wines. If you’re lucky, there will even be a winemaker or distiller to share their wonderful wisdom with you, as you sip their free product. They only happen for a couple hours a day so check the schedule first.

Astor Wines

Astor Wines is a lovely shop, filled to the brim with flavorful wines and spirits, near NYU. Like Chelsea Wine Vault, they offer free tastings during the week! Instead of a particular winemaker, Astor Wines features specialties from a country or region, teaching about the location and style of winemaking. The best part is you receive discounts just for participating! Check out their schedule here and go visit them on Lafayette.

Union Square Wines

Conveniently located right in Union Square, USQ is known to its loyal customers for their great selection, and many available tastings, especially during the weekend. On Saturdays, they’re likely to open a bottle (or 12) for customers to try and taste, but they’ve also got great seated events that are more for learning than sipping. The seated events are much more intimate and require registration, but they’re definitely worth it! See their calendar here to find the perfect event for you.

Bottlerocket

Bottlerocket is great if you’re planning an event and want to have a wine tasting for a group. Their talented wine experts will help you plan your get-together, down to the food pairings and party favors. They’ll even bring the party to you! If you’re feeling a little more spontaneous, feel free to stop in any time just to see what they’re opening in that moment. Their selection is wide, and there’s always something tasty to choose from. Visit their website to learn more about their upcoming events.
